The problem

A teacher friend was paying monthly for a quiz tool she used twice a week, and it needed every student to make an account. I wanted to know whether a weekend project could replace it.

What I built

  • A quiz builder with multiple choice, true/false and short answer.
  • A join-by-code flow — no accounts for students, just a nickname.
  • A live leaderboard that updates between questions, scored on correctness and speed.
  • A teacher view showing which question the class got wrong, which is the only analytic that gets used.

Decisions worth explaining

Astro for the marketing pages, React only for the game. The landing page ships almost no JavaScript; the interactive quiz is one island.

Server-authoritative scoring. The client never computes a score. Students will inspect the network tab — I have met them.

Results

  • Runs a class of forty on school Wi-Fi without a dropped player.
  • Used weekly by three teachers; roughly 600 quiz sessions so far.
  • Costs about four dollars a month to run.
